Our last Phantom is a very special one indeed. All you have to do is look at it. Yes, it’s a black
bunny Phantom F-4J (158358) from squadron VX-4. Like so many F-4Js this was converted to an
F-4S. Photo taken at London, Ontario, Canada, in June 1988. Sadly, this absolutely beautiful
aircraft was converted to a drone and shot down in target practice. Many ex-Navy people tell me
that Navy brass was opposed to the use of the Playboy bunny moniker on the tail.
This photo of a Mig-29 Fulcrum was taken at Avoca, PA, during the June1992
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre air show. It flew with the Ukrainian Air Force.
Okay, Tomcat lovers, here’s one for you. It’s a shot of an F-14A (159870) taken at NAS Oceana,
circa October 1980. At that time the aircraft was assigned to VF-114. It would later be assigned to
VF-213 and crash off the coast of Sri Lanka on July 8,1991. Both crewmembers ejected and were
rescued.
This racing P-51D Mustang (44-74536, N991R) is owned by Brent Hisey of Bethany, OK. Photo
was taken at 2006 Thunder over Michigan air show. During a qualification lap at the 2002 Reno air
races, ‘Miss America’ declared a may day and had to make an emergency landing. She suffered
major damage, but has obviously been beautifully restored. We haven’t seen this Mustang at any
shows recently, so we hope she is okay.
You don’t see many Stearmans in US Coast Guard markings so we were enthralled to see this one
at the 2006 Thunder over Michigan air show. This PT-17 (75-3546, N73449) is owned by Joe
Szymanowicz from Cranesville, PA.
