There are many T-6 Texans/SNJs/Harvards still flying but this one is special. This trainer, an
AT-6C (42-48884, N884TA), was delivered from the North American production line to
Tuskegee, Alabama in March 1943. After being bounced from air base to air base, it wound up
at Davis-Monthan AFB in the boneyard. At one point during its journey it was converted to an
AT-6G (49-3190). After bouncing around some more from civilian owner to civilian owner it
was purchased by Steve Cowell. After he purchased the aircraft, the historical significance of this
plane was discovered by Air Force historians. It is the only known aircraft in existence flown
exclusively by Tuskegee cadets during WWII.
This AC-47D Spooky Gunship (43-48770) was on display at the Luke AFB air show. It was
converted from a C-47B for use in Vietnam. A total of 53 such conversions were made. What
makes this gunship so special is its service in Vietnam and the special man who served on her.
On February 24, 1969, this AC-47D, call sign Spooky 71, of the 3rd Special Ops Squadron
took off in the early evening to attack two enemy positions near Long Binh Army Base which was
under mortar attack. Spooky 71’s first attack run went fine, but while setting up for its second
attack, trouble ensued.
